The Moose received 5.8″ of new snow this week! It’s sitting on a 90% fresh groomed base on 40 runs. However, our temperature cutoff at the base lodge is 20 below for the sake of our outdoor employees there, and for the safety of all shredders.
Just now, Thanksgiving morning it is 24 below at 6 a.m., with 11 below on the mountain. That would be just below our “no go” temperature cutoff.
We’ll need to wait and see. When we do open, it’s going to be an all powder day, with no grooming until after we shred it all up. That part will be fun for those with good layers, face masks, and goggles to prevent any exposed skin. Significant chill factor occurs as you slide down the mountain even at speeds as low as 5 mph. Under dressed shredders may not be allowed on the bus for their own safety.
In the meanwhile, skiing on a licensed ski area in Alaska (that’s Moose Mountain for example) is illegal when closed without presence of ski patrol with access to rescue equipment. Ironic, since you could go climb and ski off Mt Deborah for instance at your own risk, no permission required.
For now, check the weather buttons below for live temps and various elevations.
